When will your tax refund arrive (and why is it late)?

Most refunds land within two weeks of lodging. Here's the real timeline, what the myGov statuses mean, and the six things that hold refunds up.

The ATO processes most electronically-lodged returns within two weeks, and many land in under a week. If yours is taking longer, it's usually one of a handful of predictable reasons — most of them preventable at lodgement time.

The normal timeline

Lodge online (myTax or an agent) and the typical sequence is: received → processing → outcome issued, with the refund hitting your nominated bank account a day or two after the notice of assessment. Paper returns are a different world — up to 10 weeks. You can track the status in myGov under ATO → Manage tax returns.

The six common hold-ups

  1. Lodging too early. Returns lodged in the first half of July often sit in processing while the ATO waits for employer and bank data to arrive and match.
  2. Mismatched pre-fill. If what you typed disagrees with what your employer, bank or health fund reported, the return gets checked — sometimes manually.
  3. Unusual deductions. Claims well outside the pattern for your occupation and income band attract review. Fine if you have records; slow either way.
  4. Existing debts. Refunds are automatically offset against ATO debts, and can be garnished for other government debts (Centrelink, child support) before anything reaches you.
  5. Old bank details. A refund sent to a closed account bounces back and adds weeks. Check your nominated account in myGov before lodging.
  6. Identity checks. First-time lodgers and returns that trip fraud filters can be asked to verify identity — respond quickly and it clears.

What "under review" actually means

A status change to "in progress — information pending" or a letter asking for substantiation isn't an audit — it's a check. Provide the receipts or log you claimed with and most reviews resolve in days. This is exactly why the records rules matter: the hours log for working-from-home claims and receipts for anything sizeable are what turn a review from a problem into a formality.

Set the expectation before you lodge

Your refund is just the difference between what was withheld and what you actually owe — it's not a bonus, and a big one mostly means you over-withheld all year. Run your salary through the income tax calculator, compare the result with your income statement's tax withheld, add your deductions' value, and you'll predict your refund within a few dollars — before the ATO tells you.
